04.11.08 Launch of Penang Island Jazz Festival 2008
 




Come Experience Great Music in a fantastic Festival atmosphere on the beautiful island of Penang with the 5th Edition of The Penang Island Jazz Festival from the 4th to 7th December 2008!

The past 4 editions has seen the Festival sustain a gradual growth from year to year and served to establish the Festival as a highly anticipated event in the calendar for music lovers from all over Malaysia and its neighbouring countries.

1. Main Stage Performances (6th & 7th December 2008)
The Main Stage Performances on the nights of the 6th and 7th of December 2008 will feature a total of 11 Local and Foreign Groups in the Gardens of the Bayview Beach Resort, Batu Ferringhi, Penang.

The foreign performers for this year’s Festival are Friend N Fellow (Germany), Djabe featuring Steve Hackett (Hungary/UK), Tran Manh Tuan Band (Vietnam), Pascoal Meirelles Trio (Brazil), Jaume Vilaseca Quartet featuring Violetta Curry (Spain), Jeon Youngse Trio (Korea) and Ray Harris & The Fusion Experience (UK). From Malaysia, the performers are Aseana Percussion Unit, Adibah Noor, Island Jazz Connection and Andy Peterson Inc (API).

2. “An Evening With Denise Mininfield” (4th December 2008)
For the first time, the Festival is introducing the “An Evening with” Programme as a supporting activity to the Festival this year. This programme which will be held at the G Spot, G Hotel, Gurney Drive, from 10pm – 12 midnight features Denise Mininfield whose musical style is best described as a combination of Jazz, Soul, Funk and Rhythm & Blues. Denise has performed in many countries all over Asia and worked with some of the “Greats” such as Prince, The Whispers and Shelia E throughout her musical career. Joining her on stage are Andy Peterson on bass, John Thomas on Drums, Justin Lim on Keyboards and Wan Gigi on Guitar.

3. Workshops (5th to 7th December 2008)
There will be a total of eight (8) workshops being organized from 5th – 7th December 2008. Entrance to the workshops will be via Festival tickets unless otherwise stated. The workshop themes for this year are:

• “Bossanova – The People and The Music” by Xiong & Badar at the Alliance Francaise de Penang
• “Voices in The Garden” by Denise Mininfield & Mark David at Tropical Spice Garden
• “Rhythm Therapy” by Edwin Nathaniel and Paul Lau at Bayview Beach Resort (Free Admission)
• “Brazilian Grooves” by Pascoal Meirelles at Bayview Beach Resort
• “Acoustic Guitar Finger Picking Style” by Thomas Fellow at Bayview Beach Resort
• “Stylistic Interpretations in Jazz” by Wilson Quah at Bayview Beach Resort
• “Jazz Flirts With Tradition” by Tran Manh Tuan at Bayview Beach Resort
• “Jazz for Kids” by Denise Mininfield supported by Wilson Quah and Edwin Nathaniel at Bayview Beach Resort (Free Admission)

4. The Jimmy Boyle Young Talent Jazz Competition 2007 (4th December 2008)

The Jimmy Boyle Young Talent Jazz Competition was initiated in 2006 as an effort to recognize the invaluable contribution of one of Penang and Malaysia’s foremost jazz musicians and composers, the late Jimmy Boyle. The Competition also provides an avenue to inculcate, encourage and promote the young musical talents of today. The Winner of the Competition will open the 1st night of the Festival’s Main Stage Performances.

The finals of the Jimmy Boyle Young Talent Jazz Competition 2008 will be held at 6.30pm on the 4th of December 2008 at the Grand Ballroom of the Bayview Beach Resort Batu Ferringhi. Admission to the Finals is free.

The Competition is supported by JS Music, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, The Bayview Beach Resort and Music Mart.

5. The Fringe Stages (5th to 7th December 2008)
The Fringe Stage which has received much positive feedback when first introduced in 2006 has now been expanded to 2 stages this year with the “G Stage” at the G Hotel Lobby Lounge in Gurney Drive and “The Fringe Corner” at the Lobby Lounge of the Bayview Beach Resort, Batu Ferringhi, from 5th to 7th December.

The Fringe Stages seek to create awareness, promote and serve as a preview to the main performances of the Festival. As the name implies, it also provide an avenue for musicians to showcase their musical creativity. The selected performers for this year’s Fringe Stages include Xiong & Badar, Evening Breeze, Dasha Logan, Cobots, Albert Sirimal & Russell Curtis, Prema Yin, G Spot Band, Tonal Alchemy, Q Jazz Collective and The Areca Centre Jazz Quintet.
Admission to these performances is free.

6. The Jazz Gallery (5th – 7th December 2008)
The Jazz Gallery which will be located at the Foyer of the Grand Ballroom of Bayview Beach Resort Batu Ferringhi will house an exhibition of posters, photographs, paintings and other paraphernalia of Jazz Festivals from other parts of the world. In an effort to recognize the contributions of individuals who have contributed to the jazz and music industry, the exhibition has initiated a series on selected local and international personalities.

In addition, there will also be a Percussion & Drum Exhibition and Musical Instrument Display Booths at the Jazz Gallery. Admission to the Jazz Gallery is free.

7. The Community Drum Circle (7th December 2008)

Initiated last year with tremendous response from the public, the Community Drum Circle will this year once again be conducted by members of the Aseana Percussion Unit and Tugu Drum Circle on Sunday, 7th December 2008 at the Gardens of Bayview Beach Resort at 10.00 a.m.

Entry to the Community Drum Circle is free and all participants are advised to bring their own percussion instruments to join in the session. The Drum Circle will demonstrate the use of percussions and rhythms as a universal language.

8. “Jazz With A HEART” Charity Dinner (5th December 2008)
With a view of maintaining a social aspect of the Festival, Soroptimist International Penang will be co-hosting the Festival Charity Dinner to raise funds for Persatuan Kebajikan Shammah, Butterworth, Penang (Shammah Home) – a home for abandoned children and children whose parents are drug addicts.

The Charity Dinner will be held at the Grand Ballroom of the Bayview Beach Resort on Friday, 5th December 2008 and feature performances by Island Jazz Connection, Xiong & Badar and Denise Mininfield. Tickets are priced at RM120 per ticket or RM1,200 per table for an eight course Chinese dinner.

9. Photograph Exhibition (17th – 30th November 2008)
As a lead up to the Festival, a Photograph Exhibition on past years’ editions of the Festival will be held at the Alliance Francaise de Penang, 46, Jalan Phuah Hin Leong. 10050 Penang. Open from 10am – 4.00pm (except Sundays and Mondays). Admission to the exhibition is free.

FESTIVAL INFORMATION
The Penang Island Jazz 2008 Festival organized by The Capricorn Connection is Presented by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, Endorsed and Supported by Ministry of Tourism Malaysia and Penang Tourism Action Council, in partnership with Astro, Bayview Beach Resort and Red FM. The Festival is also supported by the G Hotel, Starbucks Coffee, Häagen-Dazs, Heineken, JS Music, Roland Asia Pacific, The Guitar Store, Tropical Spice Garden, Areca Center of Performing Arts, Alliance Francaise de Penang and Goethe-Institut Kuala Lumpur.

The Penang Island Jazz Festival 2008 has also been included to be part of the activities of the inaugural Penang Cultural Fest which will be held from 4th to 8th December 2008.
